Have you ever tried Yerba Maté? ( yuh·buh ma·tay) If not, you’re in for a treat! This roasted version of South America’s beloved beverage is smooth, full-bodied, and packed with a comforting coffee-like toasted flavour. It’s also rich in mateine, a natural, mild stimulant similar to caffeine, but without the jitters.
Where Does It Come From?
Our roasted Maté or Yerba Maté comes from the lush highlands of Paraná, Brazil, grown between 2000 & 2750 feet above sea level. This region is known for producing some of the finest Yerba Maté in the world.
What’s in It?
Roasted maté. That’s it. Simple and pure.
Why Is Mate So Special?
Yerba Mate has been called "the drink of the gods" by indigenous South Americans for centuries. It’s traditionally brewed from the leaves of the Yerba Mate tree (Ilex paraguariensis), a small evergreen that’s part of the holly family.
Fun fact: When Jesuit missionaries arrived in South America in the 1600s, they were so impressed by the popularity of mate that they started the first commercial mate plantations. Fast forward a few centuries, and this cherished drink has become a staple not just in South America but around the world.
The drink itself is steeped in tradition (pun intended!). People in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay often enjoy it with friends, sipping it from a gourd (called a mate) through a metal straw known as a bombilla. Sharing maté is a sign of friendship and hospitality.
Why Roasted Mate?
This roasted version takes the experience to a new level. The roasting process brings out a rich, toasty flavour that’s smooth and slightly astringent – perfect for anyone looking for an alternative to tea or coffee. Plus, it’s packed with antioxidants, nutrients, and Vitamin C, giving you an energizing boost with every sip.
A Symbol of Friendship
In South America, they say, "When one offers mate, they offer friendship." With its warm, inviting flavour and deep cultural roots, roasted mate is the perfect drink to share.
How to Brew It
Hot Brewing:
- Use 1 teaspoon of roasted mate per cup (200–260ml).
- Bring freshly drawn water to a rolling boil (100°C/212°F).
- Steep for 3–7 minutes, depending on how strong you like it:
- 3–5 minutes for a milder cup.
- 6–7 minutes for a stronger, bolder flavour.
Iced Mate:
If you’re feeling adventurous, mate is amazing as iced tea! Steep 6 teaspoons in 315ml of boiling water for 5 minutes, then pour it over ice and cold water to make a 1-litre pitcher. Perfect for hot days.
What About Additions?
Mate has a naturally rich flavour, so you don’t need to add milk, sugar, lemon, or anything else – unless you want to experiment! We don't mind adding a bit of mint tho.
